Project Overview

Client: FM Conway

This spring, CC Infrastructure Services completed a major mural installation on the Swandon Way railway bridge in Wandsworth Town centre.  The project has transformed a key gateway into the town, creating a cleaner, brighter environment for residents and road users.

FM Conway, infrastructure delivery partner for the London Borough of Wandsworth, chose CC Infrastructure Services to complete the project due to their previous experience on mural projects, their cost-effective tender bid, and the range of services they offer.

Toby Allen, Contract Manager for FM Conway, said:

“FM Conway has successfully partnered with CC Infrastructure Services over a number of years and has developed confidence in their expertise and ability to deliver projects of this nature. Following a competitive tender exercise, they were selected based on their strong submission and competitive pricing.”

The project

The CC-IS team worked on site for 6 weeks to deep clean, prepare, and prime, the precast concrete railway overbridge. Once the walls were prepared, a mural was installed and protected with a clear anti-graffiti finish.

The cleaning was carried out using an Aquila Jetwash system to remove all dirt and grime to prepare it for the mural.

The mural incorporates local buildings and features into the design.

CC-IS commissioned a local mural artist – Mark Tantis from Demograffix – to paint the mural. The design was set out using a combination of freehand and Virtual Reality headsets and the mural was applied by hand and spray paint techniques.

Finally, CC-IS applied an anti-graffiti coating by hand application to protect the mural and the bridge from future tampering.

The challenges

Swandon Way is a busy carriageway, and Transport for London wanted to minimise the use of traffic lights. This required detailed planning, and robust traffic and pedestrian management, resulting in a three-phase project to minimise any impact to residents and road users. Co-operation and communication were key; CC-IS worked together with FM Conway and the lighting contractors to ensure the project programme was met.

Most of the cleaning and preparation work was completed at night, with the mural painted in the day for better visibility.

The Outcome

Toby concluded:

“The project was completed on time, within budget, and to the high standard we expected. The value of the anti-graffiti coating was demonstrated almost immediately when graffiti appeared on the bridge just days after completion. CC Infrastructure Services responded promptly, and the coating enabled the graffiti to be removed quickly and effectively while protecting the mural beneath.

The client was pleased with the quality of the finish, and we received very positive feedback from the local community.”
